Free Guide to Airline Luggage and Baggage Rules

Understanding Airline Baggage Policies and Weight Limits

Most airlines have specific rules about how much luggage you can bring and how much it can weigh. These policies vary significantly between carriers, so understanding your airline's particular rules before you travel can help prevent unexpected fees or delays at the airport. Weight restrictions exist because heavier planes require more fuel and affect how many passengers an airline can safely carry on each flight.

Major U.S. carriers like American Airlines, Delta, United, and Southwest typically allow one personal item free of charge. A personal item is usually defined as a purse, backpack, laptop bag, or small carry-on that fits under the seat in front of you. Dimensions are often around 18 inches long by 14 inches wide by 8 inches deep, though these measurements can vary. Beyond the personal item, most full-service carriers allow one carry-on bag at no additional cost if you have a standard ticket.

Weight limits for carry-on bags typically range from 22 to 26 pounds, though airlines don't always enforce carry-on weight restrictions as strictly as checked baggage limits. Checked bags, however, have more consistent weight restrictions. The standard limit across most major airlines is 50 pounds for the first checked bag. Bags exceeding this weight usually incur an overweight fee, commonly between $100 and $200 depending on how much over the limit they are.

Budget airlines operate differently from traditional carriers. Southwest includes two free checked bags with every ticket type, which is unusual in today's market. In contrast, carriers like Frontier and Spirit charge for both carry-on and checked bags, though they allow a small personal item free. The savings on ticket price with these airlines often disappears when you factor in baggage fees.

Practical takeaway: Before booking a flight, visit your airline's website and look for the baggage policy section. Note the dimensions and weight limits for both carry-on and checked bags. If you're flying with a budget carrier, calculate the total cost including baggage fees to compare fairly with other airlines.

Baggage Dimensions and Size Restrictions Explained

Beyond weight, airlines restrict baggage based on dimensions—length, width, and height. These restrictions ensure bags fit in overhead bins and aircraft storage areas. Understanding how airlines measure bags can help you select appropriate luggage or pack strategically.

The industry standard for carry-on bags, established by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), is 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches, sometimes called the "22-inch rule." However, not all airlines follow this standard. American Airlines allows slightly larger carry-ons at 22 inches by 14 inches by 9 inches, while United Airlines permits bags up to 24 inches by 16 inches by 10 inches. These seemingly small differences matter—a bag that fits comfortably on one airline might be rejected on another.

Airlines measure dimensions by adding the length, width, and height together to create a total linear dimension. A bag measuring 22 inches long, 14 inches wide, and 9 inches tall would have a total linear dimension of 45 inches. Some airlines use this measurement system instead of individual dimension limits. For example, Spirit Airlines limits carry-on bags to 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches—a total linear measurement of 50 inches.

Checked baggage typically has more generous dimensions since it goes in the aircraft's cargo hold rather than the cabin. Most airlines allow checked bags up to 62 inches total linear dimension, which accommodates most standard hard-shell and soft-shell suitcases. A typical checked bag might measure 29 inches by 20 inches by 13 inches, totaling 62 inches.

Soft-sided luggage is advantageous because it can compress slightly, potentially fitting within size restrictions even if packed full. Hard-sided luggage is rigid and cannot compress, so it must be under the stated limits when fully packed. Additionally, bags with wheels, handles, and pockets all count toward the overall dimensions.

Practical takeaway: When purchasing luggage, check the manufacturer's stated dimensions and compare them to your airline's specific size restrictions. If you frequently fly with a particular airline, invest in carry-on luggage that stays within their maximum dimensions. Soft-sided bags offer flexibility if you're prone to packing items at the last minute.

Checked Baggage Fees and What They Cover

Checked baggage fees represent a significant source of revenue for airlines. Understanding what these fees cover and when they apply can help you budget for travel and potentially avoid unnecessary charges. The landscape of baggage fees has evolved considerably since airlines began charging for checked bags in 2008, following fuel price increases.

The first checked bag typically costs between $30 and $40 on major U.S. carriers if you purchase it at the airport. Online check-in sometimes offers discounts—booking your baggage fee online when you purchase your ticket or during online check-in 24 hours before departure often costs $25 to $35. Certain credit cards and frequent flyer program memberships waive the first checked bag fee entirely. For example, many airline-branded credit cards include a first checked bag fee waiver for the cardholder and sometimes their immediate family traveling on the same reservation.

A second checked bag typically costs $40 to $50, with fees increasing substantially for additional bags. Most airlines limit free checked bags to passengers flying in premium cabin classes like Business or First Class, elite frequent flyer members, or those with specific credit cards. A standard economy passenger on a major U.S. carrier usually pays for any checked baggage beyond the first bag.

Budget airlines operate on different models. Spirit Airlines charges $35 for the first checked bag and $45 for the second when purchased online, with higher prices if you pay at the airport. Frontier Airlines charges $28 for the first checked bag online. These fees accumulate quickly—a family of four traveling with two bags each could pay $240 to $400 in checked baggage fees alone on a budget carrier.

Weight and size surcharges apply when bags exceed standard limits. Overweight bags—typically those between 50 and 70 pounds—incur additional fees of $100 to $200. Oversized bags that exceed the linear dimension limit are subject to similar surcharges. These fees compound, so a bag that is both overweight and oversized could generate $200 to $400 in additional charges.

Practical takeaway: Before traveling, determine which checked bags are free for your specific ticket type and airline. Check if your credit card or loyalty program membership includes baggage fee waivers. Weigh your bags at home using a bathroom scale to avoid overweight fees. Consider the total cost of baggage fees when comparing ticket prices between airlines.

Special Items, Sports Equipment, and Unusual Baggage

Beyond standard luggage, airlines have specific rules for sports equipment, musical instruments, mobility devices, and other special items. These policies can vary considerably, and items that one airline accommodates may incur substantial fees on another. Understanding these policies prevents surprises at the airport.

Sports equipment generally falls into two categories: equipment counted as checked baggage and equipment charged additional fees. Golf bags, ski and snowboard equipment, and bicycles typically incur additional fees ranging from $50 to $200 depending on the airline and how the equipment is packaged. Some airlines have specific requirements—equipment must be in a hard case, for example, or skis and snowboards must be in a ski bag measuring no more than 62 inches. Delta charges $150 for golf clubs, while United charges $130. These fees apply per item, so traveling with both skis and a golf bag could cost $300 or more in equipment fees alone.

Musical instruments have received special attention from airlines following regulations and advocacy. The U.S. Department of Transportation clarifies that passengers may bring full-size instruments as carry-on baggage if space permits, or check them as baggage. However, airlines are not required to guarantee a seat for an instrument. Many musicians purchase a ticket for their instrument to ensure it travels safely. A full-size cello or stand-up bass typically requires a seat or must be checked in a protective case. Airlines that do allow instruments as checked baggage often require specialized cases and may charge handling fees.

Mobility devices including wheelchairs, walkers, and scooters are treated differently than standard luggage. The Air Carrier Access Act requires airlines to transport mobility devices at no charge. Wheelchairs can be checked at the gate or cargo hold, and the airline covers
