Free Guide to Cruise Luggage Packing Rules
Understanding Cruise Line Luggage Allowances
Each cruise line sets its own rules about how much luggage you can bring on board. These rules vary by cruise line, cabin type, and sometimes by the length of your voyage. Understanding these policies before you pack helps you avoid extra fees and ensures your luggage makes it onto the ship without problems.

Most major cruise lines allow two pieces of luggage per person at no extra charge. For example, Carnival typically permits two bags per guest, while Royal Caribbean offers similar allowances. Norwegian Cruise Line may have slightly different rules depending on which fare type you purchase. A standard piece of luggage is usually defined as a suitcase that weighs no more than 50 pounds and measures around 22 by 14 by 9 inches.
Some cruise lines distinguish between different types of cabins. Suite passengers or those in premium accommodations might receive higher baggage allowances than guests in standard inside or oceanview cabins. A suite guest might be able to bring three or four bags, while a standard cabin passenger brings two. It's worth checking your specific booking documents because you may have received extra baggage allowance with your fare.
Weight limits are another important consideration. Most cruise lines set a 50-pound limit per bag. If your luggage weighs more, you may face overweight fees of $15 to $50 per bag, depending on the cruise line. Disney Cruise Line, for instance, charges approximately $15 per bag for overweight luggage. Weighing your bags at home on a bathroom scale before you leave prevents surprises at the port.
Practical takeaway: Contact your cruise line directly or check your booking confirmation to learn your specific baggage allowance. Write down the weight and size limits, then measure and weigh your packed bags at home before departure.
Prohibited Items and Restricted Goods
Cruise lines and maritime law prohibit certain items from being brought on board for safety and security reasons. These restrictions protect all passengers and crew members. Understanding what you cannot bring helps you pack smarter and avoids confiscation of items at the port or security screening.

Weapons and dangerous items top the prohibited list. You cannot bring firearms, ammunition, explosives, fireworks, or weapons of any kind. This includes items like flare guns, pocket knives, and martial arts equipment. Even items that seem harmless—like certain tools or sporting equipment—may be prohibited because they could be used as weapons. Cruise lines take weapon restrictions very seriously, and violation can result in being denied boarding.
Certain liquids and substances are restricted or banned outright. You cannot bring more than 12 ounces of flammable liquids such as lighter fluid, gasoline, or paint thinner. Alcohol brought from home is typically forbidden; you can purchase beverages on the ship or at ports, but outside alcohol cannot enter your cabin. Some cruise lines allow a limited amount of wine or beer purchased at ports to be brought to your cabin, though policies vary. Check your specific cruise line's policy on this restriction.
Medications require special consideration. You may bring prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs in reasonable quantities for personal use. Keep medications in their original labeled containers with your name on them. The pharmacy on many cruise ships can fill prescriptions, but bringing your own medications ensures you have what you need. Controlled substances require documentation; if you take medications like certain pain relievers or anxiety medications, bring a letter from your doctor explaining the prescription.
Electronics and other items have limitations. You can bring personal electronics like phones, laptops, tablets, and cameras, but some cruise lines restrict certain items. For example, some lines limit the number of suitcases but may allow additional carry-on bags for personal electronics and valuables. Extension cords with multiple outlets may be prohibited due to fire codes. Check with your cruise line about specific electronic devices if you plan to bring items beyond standard phones and cameras.
Practical takeaway: Before packing, visit your cruise line's website and review the full prohibited items list. Create a checklist of items you plan to bring and cross-reference it against the restrictions. This step takes 15 minutes but saves you from losing items or facing boarding delays.
Packing Strategy for Different Cabin Types
The type of cabin you booked affects how much luggage space you'll have once on board. Interior cabins are the smallest, while balcony cabins and suites offer more room. Understanding your cabin's dimensions helps you pack appropriately and know what to expect when you arrive in your quarters.

Interior cabins typically measure around 160 to 185 square feet and are designed for minimal storage. These compact spaces have a small closet, a few drawers, and limited floor space. If you're in an interior cabin, you'll need to be strategic. Pack rolling suitcases rather than hard-sided boxes, as rolling luggage takes up less space and fits better in closets. Bring minimal luggage—ideally just two small to medium-sized bags. Unpacking as soon as you get to your cabin is essential so you can store items and create working space. Many travelers use under-bed storage or hanging organizers purchased at drugstores to maximize closet and drawer space.
Oceanview and balcony cabins generally offer 170 to 210 square feet of space, with better storage options. These cabins often include a larger closet, additional drawers, and sometimes a sofa or seating area. You can comfortably bring two standard-sized suitcases and still have room to move around. However, you'll still want to unpack quickly, as open luggage takes up precious floor space in these smaller rooms.
Suites offer substantially more space—sometimes 400 to 1,000+ square feet depending on the ship and suite category. Suite guests typically have separate living areas, larger closets, and abundant storage. If you're in a suite, you can bring larger luggage and more items without worrying as much about space constraints. Many suite passengers bring three to four bags without difficulty. Some suites have butler service, which means staff can help you unpack and organize your belongings.
All cabin types benefit from the same packing principle: choose clothes that work in multiple combinations. Five shirts, three pairs of pants, and two dresses can create numerous outfit combinations without requiring a separate bag. This layering approach works because you'll visit different dining venues and ports—casual daywear for sea days, resort wear for tropical ports, and dressier clothing for formal or elegant dining nights.
Practical takeaway: Request your cabin deck plan and dimensions from your cruise line before packing. Knowing your exact cabin size lets you choose luggage that fits comfortably and pack only what you'll realistically use.
Luggage Types and What Actually Works at Sea
The type of luggage you choose affects packing efficiency and durability throughout your cruise. Different luggage styles have advantages and drawbacks for maritime travel. Selecting the right luggage type makes your cruise experience smoother and protects your belongings.

Rolling suitcases are the most practical choice for cruise travel. Hard-sided rolling suitcases like those made by brands such as Samsonite or Rimowa offer excellent protection for fragile items and withstand the rough handling that occurs during luggage transport. They're easy to maneuver through airports and on ship corridors. Soft-sided rolling luggage is slightly lighter and sometimes more flexible for fitting into tight spaces, but offers less protection. Most experienced cruise travelers recommend hard-sided rolling bags that measure 22 inches or smaller to meet standard baggage size limits and fit comfortably in cabin storage.
Duffel bags are lightweight and compress well, but they're harder to manage at ports where you're navigating cobblestone streets or boarding tenders to reach shore excursions. A duffel might serve well as a second bag for extra items, but rolling luggage should be your primary bag.
Backpacks work if you're young or active and plan to spend significant time on shore excursions rather than in your cabin. However, backpacks don't protect clothing as well as structured luggage, and they're less convenient for storing in small cabin spaces.
Hard-sided suitcases offer superior protection compared to soft-sided options. Your belongings face multiple handling points: from your car to the port, through port security, onto the ship, and eventually to your cabin. Hard cases protect items like electronics, glass, or delicate souvenirs you plan to bring home. The downside is that hard cases are heavier and take up more space in your cabin.
