Free Guide to Web Browsing on Your PS5

Understanding the PS5 Web Browser Basics

The PlayStation 5 includes a built-in web browser that lets you browse the internet directly from your console. This browser, based on Chromium technology, works similarly to browsers you might use on a computer or phone. The PS5 web browser launched with the console's system software in November 2020 and has received updates over time to improve performance and compatibility.

The browser is located in the PS5's function area, which you can reach from the home screen. To find it, scroll down to the function row and look for the web browser icon. The interface is designed specifically for use with your PS5 controller, which means navigation works differently than using a mouse and keyboard. You can use the analog sticks to move a cursor around the screen, and the buttons perform standard browser functions like clicking links and scrolling.

The PS5 browser supports many modern web technologies including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript, which means most websites display and function correctly. However, some sites that rely on specific plugins or older technologies may not work perfectly. Video streaming services like YouTube, Netflix, and others function on the PS5 browser, though they also have dedicated PS5 apps that may offer better performance.

The browser does not support extensions or add-ons like you might use on a computer browser. This keeps the interface simple and focused on core browsing functionality. Your browsing history, bookmarks, and settings are stored on your console and sync across sessions when you use the same PSN account.

Practical Takeaway: The PS5 web browser is a straightforward tool for general web browsing from your living room. Understanding its location and basic navigation with your controller prepares you for efficient internet use on your console.

Setting Up and Accessing the Web Browser

Accessing the PS5 web browser requires only a few steps. First, make sure your PS5 is connected to the internet through either Wi-Fi or an ethernet cable. Connection quality matters for browsing performance—a stable connection with at least 5 Mbps download speed provides smooth browsing for most websites. If you're experiencing slow loading times, check your network settings in the PS5 system menu under "Settings" and "Network."

To open the browser, press the PS button on your controller to bring up the control center. From here, navigate to the function area by scrolling down or across, depending on your menu layout. Look for an icon that resembles a globe or web browser symbol. Selecting this icon opens the browser application. The first time you open it, the browser may take a few seconds to load completely.

Once the browser is open, you'll see a home page or search interface. The PS5 browser uses a search engine to help you find websites. You can type website addresses directly into the address bar at the top of the screen. The on-screen keyboard appears when you need to enter text. Using the controller, move the cursor to the address bar, press X to activate it, and then use the on-screen keyboard to type your desired website address.

The browser offers several viewing options. You can use the standard view, which displays websites as they would appear on a smaller screen, or zoom in and out as needed. Many users find zooming in helpful when reading text from a distance, since TVs are typically viewed from farther away than computer monitors. You can adjust zoom levels using the controller's L2 and R2 buttons or through the browser menu.

Practical Takeaway: Setting up PS5 web browsing takes minimal time—ensure your internet connection is stable, locate the browser icon in the function area, and familiarize yourself with typing text using the on-screen keyboard for smoother future use.

Controlling Navigation and Managing Bookmarks

The PS5 controller serves as your primary navigation tool in the web browser. The left analog stick or D-pad moves the cursor around the screen, while the right analog stick can scroll through page content. The X button functions as a standard "click" to follow links or select options. The circle button acts as a "back" button to return to previously visited pages, similar to using the back arrow in other browsers.

The triangle button opens the browser menu, where you'll find options like refresh, home, history, and bookmarks. Refreshing a page reloads its content, which can resolve loading issues or show updated information. The home button takes you back to the browser's default start page. These functions work the same way as in computer browsers, just accessed through controller buttons instead of a menu bar.

Bookmarking websites on the PS5 is straightforward. When you're on a page you want to save, open the menu with the triangle button and select "Add Bookmark." The page is then saved to your bookmarks folder, which you can access anytime by opening the menu and selecting "Bookmarks." You can organize bookmarks and create folders to keep frequently visited sites organized. This feature is particularly useful for websites you visit regularly, eliminating the need to type the address each time.

Scrolling through long pages uses the right analog stick. Push it up to scroll down the page, or down to scroll up. The L1 and R1 buttons can also navigate between pages or tabs. If a website isn't responding to your inputs, try refreshing the page. Some interactive elements on websites may require precise cursor positioning to activate properly, so move your cursor slowly over buttons and links if they don't respond immediately.

Practical Takeaway: Master the controller layout for browsing—use the left stick to navigate, X to click, circle to go back, and the menu button to access bookmarks and settings. Bookmark frequently visited sites to reduce typing time and streamline your browsing experience.

Websites and Content That Work Well on PS5

Most modern websites display and function properly on the PS5 browser. News sites like BBC, CNN, and NPR work well for reading articles and watching embedded videos. Social media platforms including Reddit, Twitter, and Facebook are accessible, though the viewing experience differs from using dedicated apps on phones. The smaller screen size and controller navigation make scrolling through feeds a different experience than on mobile devices, but the core functionality remains intact.

Video content works on the PS5 browser, though with some considerations. YouTube functions in the browser, and you can watch videos, though some users prefer the dedicated PlayStation YouTube app for better performance. Streaming services like Twitch work in the browser for watching live streams or recordings. Educational video sites like Khan Academy and Coursera stream content successfully. The PS5's video processing handles most online video formats, so buffering is typically minimal with a stable internet connection.

Shopping websites including Amazon, eBay, and retailer sites function in the browser. You can browse products, read descriptions, and make purchases, though entering payment information through the on-screen keyboard requires patience. Many people find it more practical to complete purchases on other devices, but the ability to browse while sitting in front of your TV offers convenience for quick shopping tasks.

Weather services, sports websites, and reference sites like Wikipedia display well on the PS5 browser. Real estate listing sites, job boards, and recipe websites are all accessible. Email services including Gmail and Outlook work through the browser, allowing you to check messages and send emails. However, complex web applications that rely on specific browser features or plugins may not function completely—if a website isn't working properly, trying a different website for the same service often provides a solution.

Practical Takeaway: Standard informational and entertainment websites work reliably on PS5. Test sites you plan to use regularly to ensure they display well on your TV screen, and consider using dedicated apps when available for better performance.

Optimizing Your PS5 Browsing Experience

Several adjustments improve comfort and efficiency when browsing on PS5. First, consider your seating distance and TV brightness. Since you'll be reading text from across the room, position yourself at a comfortable viewing distance—typically 6 to 10 feet from a standard 55-inch TV. Adjust your TV's brightness and contrast settings to reduce eye strain during extended browsing sessions. A well-lit room also helps reduce glare on your TV screen.

Text sizing makes a significant difference in readability. Most websites allow you to zoom in using the PS5 browser's zoom function. Pressing L2 increases zoom, while R2 decreases it. Finding your preferred zoom level for reading text—typically 125% to 150% for most people—prevents the need to lean forward or strain your eyes. You can set a default zoom level in
