Understanding Internet Speed: What the Numbers Mean
Internet speed measurements can seem confusing when you first encounter them, but understanding the basics helps you make sense of your connection. Internet speed is measured in megabits per second, abbreviated as Mbps. One megabit equals one million bits of data. When a service provider advertises 100 Mbps, they mean data can theoretically transfer at a rate of 100 million bits each second.

Two primary speed measurements matter for most users: download speed and upload speed. Download speed measures how fast data travels from the internet to your device. This is the speed you use when watching videos, browsing websites, or streaming music. Upload speed measures how fast data travels from your device to the internet. You use upload speed when sending emails with large attachments, posting videos to social media, or participating in video calls.
Latency, also called ping, represents another crucial measurement. Latency measures the time delay between when you send a request and when you receive a response, typically measured in milliseconds. A lower latency number is better. High latency can make online gaming feel sluggish or make video calls appear delayed, even if your download speed seems adequate.
Different activities require different speed levels. Checking email or browsing text-based websites requires only 1-5 Mbps. Streaming high-definition video typically needs 5-25 Mbps depending on quality. Playing online multiplayer games works best with 15-25 Mbps download speed plus low latency below 100 milliseconds. Video conferencing for work or school generally needs 2.5-4 Mbps each direction.
Practical takeaway: Before running a speed check, think about what you use your internet for most. This context helps you understand whether your results are acceptable for your needs, rather than comparing your speed to someone else's requirements.
How to Run an Internet Speed Test: Step-by-Step Process
Running a speed test is straightforward and takes only a few minutes. The process involves connecting to a testing server, sending data to it, and measuring how quickly that data transfers. Multiple companies offer free speed testing tools online, including Speedtest by Ookla, Fast.com by Netflix, and several others. These tools work similarly, though they may show slightly different results due to connecting to different test servers.

To get accurate results, prepare your testing environment first. Close unnecessary browser tabs and applications running on your device. If you are using WiFi, position yourself close to your router or test with an ethernet cable connection. Ethernet connections typically provide more accurate results than WiFi because wireless signals can fluctuate based on distance and interference. If testing WiFi, note that the results reflect your WiFi signal strength and speed, not necessarily your internet service provider's speeds.
Visit one of the speed testing websites using your web browser. The site will typically display a large button to begin the test. Click the button and wait for the process to complete. The test usually takes 30 seconds to 2 minutes. During testing, the tool measures your download speed first, then upload speed, then latency. You will see results displayed as numbers with Mbps or ms units.
Record your results for comparison purposes. Running multiple tests over different times of day can reveal patterns in your internet performance. Internet speeds often vary throughout the day because network congestion changes. Testing in the morning, afternoon, and evening may show that speeds drop during evening hours when many people use the internet simultaneously. This information helps you understand whether slow performance is consistent or occasional.
Practical takeaway: Run your speed test using an ethernet cable connection when possible, close other programs before testing, and run multiple tests at different times to get a realistic picture of your typical internet performance.
Interpreting Your Speed Test Results
After running a speed test, you receive three main numbers to understand: download speed, upload speed, and latency. Your download speed appears first and is typically the largest number. Compare this to what your internet service provider promises in your service agreement. If your plan states you should receive 100 Mbps and your test shows 80 Mbps, you are receiving about 80 percent of promised speeds. This level of variance is generally considered normal because internet speeds fluctuate and tests measure speeds at specific moments in time.

Upload speed is usually much lower than download speed, which is expected and normal. Most internet plans focus on download speeds because typical users consume far more data than they send. An upload speed of 5-10 Mbps is adequate for most people. However, if you frequently send large files, run video livestreams, or upload videos regularly, you may want higher upload speeds.
Latency numbers under 100 milliseconds work well for most activities. Online gamers often prefer latency under 50 milliseconds for competitive gaming. Video conferencing participants typically do not notice delays with latency under 150 milliseconds. If your latency is consistently above 150 milliseconds, you may experience noticeable delays in real-time applications.
Several factors can explain lower-than-expected speeds. Weather can affect cable and wireless connections. Too many connected devices using bandwidth simultaneously reduces available speed for each device. Distance from your wireless router degrades WiFi speeds significantly. Older routers or modems may not support faster speeds even if your service plan includes them. Background downloads, cloud backups, or streaming services running on connected devices consume bandwidth.
If you consistently see speeds much lower than your service plan promises, contact your internet service provider to report the issue. Provide your speed test results as documentation. The provider may troubleshoot your connection, suggest moving your router, or send a technician to test the line directly.
Practical takeaway: Aim to achieve 85-90 percent of your promised speeds, understand that upload speeds are typically much lower than download speeds and this is normal, and recognize that latency matters more than speed for real-time activities like gaming and video calls.
Factors That Affect Your Internet Speed
Many variables influence the internet speed you actually experience in daily use. Your internet service provider supplies the connection to your home, but numerous factors between the provider's equipment and your devices can slow things down. Understanding these factors helps you identify which ones you can control and which ones reflect limitations beyond your influence.

Your WiFi router quality significantly impacts wireless speeds. Older routers using older WiFi standards cannot deliver newer speeds. A router from 2010 will not provide WiFi 6 speeds even if connected to a gigabit fiber line. The distance between your device and router matters greatly. WiFi signals weaken as distance increases. A device one room away from the router typically receives better speeds than a device three rooms away or on a different floor.
Environmental interference degrades WiFi signals. Walls, especially those containing metal or concrete, block wireless signals. Microwave ovens, cordless phones, and baby monitors operating on 2.4 GHz frequencies can interfere with WiFi signals on that same frequency. Switching to a 5 GHz or 6 GHz WiFi band may reduce interference, though these frequencies have shorter range.
Network congestion affects real-world speeds. Your internet service provider manages bandwidth for all customers in your area. During peak hours, typically between 7 PM and 11 PM, many people use the internet simultaneously, and speeds may decrease. This is completely normal and not a service failure. Different times of day show different speeds as congestion levels change.
The number of devices connected to your network influences available speed per device. If you are running a speed test while someone else watches streaming video, plays online games, and another person conducts a video call, the available bandwidth splits among these activities. Each activity receives only a portion of your total connection speed.
Hardware limitations on your devices matter too. Older computers or phones with older WiFi chipsets may not support the fastest speeds. A brand-new device connected to an old router still receives only the speeds the router can deliver. Similarly, an old device connected to the newest router cannot exceed what the device supports.
Practical takeaway: Test your internet speed using an ethernet cable to eliminate WiFi variables, then test again over WiFi in different locations to understand how your specific environment affects speeds, and consider these factors before assuming your service provider is delivering inadequate speeds.
Using Speed Test Information to Make Decisions
Internet speed test results provide data for evaluating whether your current service meets your needs. Gather information over several weeks by running tests multiple times weekly at different times of day. This collection of results shows patterns rather than relying on a single test. You may
