Learn About Replacing Your Lost Idaho Driver's License

Understanding Idaho Driver's License Loss and Replacement Options

Losing your driver's license can feel stressful, but the process to obtain a replacement in Idaho is straightforward once you understand the steps involved. An Idaho driver's license serves as one of the most commonly used forms of identification for driving, opening bank accounts, traveling, and verifying age. When your license goes missing, stolen, or becomes damaged beyond use, Idaho law allows you to request a replacement document from the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD).

Idaho offers two main pathways for replacing a lost license: you can visit an ITD office in person, or you can handle certain portions of the process by mail. The method you choose depends on your circumstances, location, and how quickly you need the replacement. Some people prefer the in-person route because they can resolve issues immediately if documents are questioned or if there are complications. Others find the mail option more convenient if they live far from an ITD office or have limited time during business hours.

The replacement process differs slightly depending on whether your license is currently valid, expired, or suspended. Idaho issues driver's licenses that remain valid for five years from the date of issue (for most adults under 65), so timing matters when you plan your replacement. Additionally, the fee structure varies based on your situation—whether you're replacing a lost document or renewing an expired one at the same time.

Understanding these distinctions helps you prepare the right documents and choose the right method. Before you head to an ITD office or prepare a mail request, knowing what to expect removes confusion and helps the process move smoothly. This guide walks through the specific requirements, costs, and procedures for Idaho driver's license replacement.

Practical Takeaway: Gather information about whether you want to visit an office in person or use mail service, and note your current license's expiration date—this information shapes which documents you'll need and how much the replacement will cost.

Required Documents and What You'll Need to Bring

Idaho requires proof of identity and proof of residency when you replace a lost driver's license. These requirements exist to prevent fraud and ensure that the person receiving the replacement is the rightful owner of the original license. The ITD maintains a specific list of documents that count as acceptable proof for each category, and understanding these requirements before your visit or application saves time and prevents rejection.

For proof of identity, Idaho accepts several document types. An expired passport, passport card, or passport book works. Birth certificates issued by the vital records office of the state where you were born are acceptable. Military identification documents—including military ID cards and discharge papers (DD Form 214)—also satisfy identity requirements. Some people use previous Idaho identification documents like an expired driver's license, state ID card, or Idaho tribal identification. Certain government-issued documents like a tribal enrollment card or Medicaid card with a photograph may work depending on specific circumstances. Importantly, documents must be original or certified copies—photocopies alone will not work for most identity documents.

Proof of residency requires showing that you actually live in Idaho. The ITD accepts recent utility bills (typically from the last 60 days) such as electric, gas, water, or internet bills in your name. Property tax statements, mortgage statements, or lease agreements showing your current Idaho address work. Vehicle registration documents registered to an Idaho address satisfy this requirement. Bank or credit card statements from Idaho institutions showing your name and current address are acceptable. Some people use pay stubs from Idaho employers or official mail from Idaho government agencies showing their address. The document must show your current address and your name, and it should generally be dated within the last 60 days.

You'll also need your Social Security Number and information about your current or lost license, including the license number if you remember it. If your license was stolen rather than simply lost, Idaho requests that you report the theft to local law enforcement and may request the police report number, though this isn't always required for replacement purposes.

Practical Takeaway: Before visiting an ITD office or preparing mail documents, gather your birth certificate or passport, one recent utility bill or lease agreement showing your Idaho address, and your Social Security Number—these are the core documents nearly everyone needs.

Visiting an Idaho Transportation Department Office In Person

Walking into an ITD office to replace your lost driver's license typically takes between 30 minutes to an hour, depending on how busy the office is and whether all your documents are in order. Idaho has multiple ITD offices throughout the state, located in major cities and many smaller communities. The main office sits in Boise, but regional offices serve areas like Coeur d'Alene in the north, Pocatello in the southeast, and Twin Falls in the south. Finding your nearest office is straightforward—the ITD website lists all office locations, hours of operation, and phone numbers.

When you arrive at an ITD office, you'll typically check in at a front desk or information window. Staff will ask you to provide your documents and explain your situation. Let them know your license was lost so they understand you're seeking a replacement rather than a renewal or upgrade. The ITD staff will verify your identity documents, confirm your residency, and enter your information into their system. They'll take a new photograph for your replacement license unless you specifically request to use the photograph from your previous license (this option exists and may be available depending on how recent your old photograph was and office policies).

During your visit, you'll need to review information about your license and confirm or correct details. This is your opportunity to verify that your name, address, and other biographical information are accurate. If you've changed your name since your previous license, you'll need to provide documentation of that change (such as a marriage certificate or court order). You'll also need to indicate any restrictions or endorsements on your license—for example, if you wear corrective lenses, you should mention this so it appears on your replacement.

Payment happens before you leave. As of 2024, replacing a lost valid Idaho driver's license costs $25.00. If your license has also expired and you're combining the replacement with a renewal, the total cost increases to $50.00 (the standard renewal fee). ITD offices accept cash, check, and debit or credit cards. Your replacement license will be mailed to the address you provide, typically arriving within 7 to 10 business days. You can request expedited processing for an additional fee of $20.00 to $25.00, which may reduce delivery time to 3 to 5 business days, though this varies by processing volume.

Practical Takeaway: Locate your nearest ITD office online, bring your identity and residency documents plus the $25 replacement fee (or $50 if your license is expired), and plan for 30 to 60 minutes—your new license will arrive by mail within about a week.

Processing Your Replacement by Mail

Idaho offers a mail-based option for replacing a lost driver's license, which works well for people who cannot reach an ITD office easily or prefer not to visit in person. The process requires more advance planning than an office visit because all documents must be mailed together, and the overall timeline stretches longer. However, for people living in rural areas far from any ITD office, or those with work schedules that conflict with office hours, this method provides a real alternative.

To start a mail replacement, contact the ITD directly to request a replacement application packet. You can call the main ITD office or visit their website to request that they mail you the necessary forms. The office will send you an application form specifically for driver's license replacement, along with instructions detailing exactly which documents to include and how to submit them. Read these instructions carefully because the ITD will reject incomplete applications, requiring you to resubmit and causing significant delays.

Your mailed packet should include the completed application form (signed and dated), photocopies of your identity documents, photocopies of your residency proof, and a check or money order for the replacement fee. Do not mail cash. Include a check or money order for $25.00 for a standard replacement, or $50.00 if your license is also expired. Some people include a prepaid return envelope to receive their replacement license more reliably, though the ITD typically includes postage on outgoing licenses regardless. Address your packet carefully to the ITD office location specified in the instructions—using the wrong address will cause significant delays.

Processing times for mail applications generally run 15 to 21 business days from when the ITD receives your packet, plus the time for your mailed packet to arrive and for your replacement to return by mail. This means the total timeline from mailing your application to receiving your replacement license typically spans 3
